Sayers Straw Bale Workshop
RESULT: Creates a spacious working area to accommodate any hobbyist’s needs. With a large sliding door and a built-in loft, this workshop can store everything needed to rebuild a tractor. The bathroom is designed with ecological alternatives (gray water shower/sink and composting toilet), which greatly reduces costs while revitalizing local soils.
DESIGN DETAILS: Uses load-bearing bale walls to decrease the amount of lumber required, and is designed to allow phased construction, such as adding the loft or the bathroom after the main building is completed. When the client is ready, we will organize a community building workshop through CASBA (California Straw Building Association), which will keep labor costs down.
LOCATION: Rural Sonoma County, the views of the property were a design emphasis.
